Own your own hologram device with PORTL hologram machine
Imagine asking Joe Biden or Donald Trump the questions you would really like them to answer as the election nears – and ask them to answer you. Now a new machine could allow you to do just that.
PORTL claims to be the world’s most advanced hologram technology. Its inventor, David Nussbaum created the PORTL unit after working on arena-sized holograms, and the Ronald Reagan Library hologram.
The PORTL unit is a full-size machine, the size of a vending machine, that will emit a 4k holographic presence from anywhere in real time.
You can shoot live content in the app that connects it to the PORTL device. The live person in the PORTL unit can see, hear and interact with the audience without delay.
At just 7ft x 5ft x 2ft, it achieves the goal of making life-size holograms available in small spaces, without expensive installations. The devices can “transmit” people from anywhere in the world, and record and play holograms of people and animations.
Last week, the company announced a partnership with Lost Angeles, Calif.-Based SAAS interactive video platform StoryFile to deliver video that will respond to the user and add AI and natural conversation to digital content.
With StoryFile AI, a hologram is created that can also answer questions and respond if someone shows up at PORTL to engage with them.
The StoryFile and PORTL partnership will place content created by StoryFile into PORTL hologram projection machines, to present subjects with realistic shadows, even in broad daylight.
Fans could chat with celebrities and other notable people who recorded answers to a series of questions. These answers are used to answer questions that give the appearance of a live chat with the celebrity or famous person.
The possibilities for this device are very wide. Museums and Halls of Fame would benefit from PORTL with the StoryFile AI partnership.
Visitors could interact and ask questions of people throughout history whose answers were recorded for PORTL. Sharing and preserving the stories in the storyteller’s own words could bring those stories to life.
In fact, the first package has already been sold to the Irish Medtronic who will use it to teach on one of its American campuses. PORTL could also be implemented in trade shows, airports, shopping malls – anywhere there are people nearby.
No special equipment is needed to produce the hologram. All you need is a white background at the far end.
The company offers a list of tips to ensure the end result is good and trains customers in the use of PORTL. Obviously, the faster the Internet connection, the better the result.
Self-contained units, made of steel, can be powder coated to suit brand requirements. The unit has built-in speakers, located at head height for an adult. The stereo speakers are aligned left and right for a good audio experience.
A front-facing camera is integrated into the unit’s bezel. This allows the person teleported to the unit to see, hear and interact with the public in real time.
Several units could also be networked so that the teleported person could be in several places at the same time.
The camera will also act as a detector to trigger motion specific content if someone walks in front of the screen. AI facial recognition is used to provide a more personalized experience for the user, interacting with the avatar in real time.
The light is distributed evenly around the unit, to ensure the best possible experience. The internal corners are curved to give a smoother projection and give a more solid realistic look inside the hologram unit.
To use it, plug it into the wall and it’s good to go. Use the PORTL app to select content, click and the content is transmitted to the unit and is ready to be used. Watch David Nussbaum demonstrates real-time PORTL unit in this YouTube video.
The one-time cost of a PORTL unit is for hardware and software, as well as installation and training. In the future, there will be new software add-ons to purchase when they become available.
For the StoryFile AI version – a personalized experience – also involves the creation of the interviews and the hologram, and the programming of the AI. Again, the company expects these to be one-time fees as well.
If you must have one of these devices but don’t think you have the space, don’t worry. In 2021 the the company plans to launch a mini 3ft tall version of the PORTL unit which could easily fit into your home.
Video conferencing calls will never be the same again.
