Meet the travelers who pay to get lost in the middle of nowhere
We’ve all dreamed of chopping down tools and walking in the wilderness to explore the great unknown.
Your family might not like it, but if they can’t find you, what can they do?
And while the boss might not approve, the wilderness doesn’t have a signal, does it?
The truth is, we all need a little lonely every now and then – and that’s exactly what the luxury travel agency Black Tomato offer.
Their tailor-made Get the lost vacation service is the ultimate trip for anyone looking to get away from it all – especially if your idea of fun is lodged in the middle of nowhere with just a backpack, GPS tracker and toothbrush in your name.
Travelers are then charged with the arduous task of finding their way back to civilization – a difficult but ultimately rewarding experience for those hoping to embrace their inner nomad.
From Mississippi to Morocco
When you imagine the kind of person who could go on an expedition like this, visions of beefy, lycra-clad men come to mind – the kind of people who wear arctic jackets at the supermarket and eat exclusively. their meat with bone.
You can’t envision a Texas mother of two.
But get to know the real one Esther spengler, and you’ll understand why she needed a trip like this in the first place.
“After being married for almost ten years and raising two children as a stay-at-home mom, you kind of get lost,” says Esther.
“I had become really dead inside and no longer knew who I was as an individual. “
While searching for a birthday present for her husband, Esther came across the Black Tomato promotional video. It was a moment that would change his life for good.
“As soon as I looked at it, I cried, because it struck a chord and I couldn’t even describe it. It is as if my heart has started to beat again.
Fast forward to 2021, and Esther had saved enough money to make her dream trip a reality.
“I was doing all kinds of things. I was donating plasma. I was running around to make deliveries. I was fundraising. I was doing everything I could think of to collect that money.
What about shipping? A three-day excursion into the Moroccan wilderness, with evenings lit by fire under the stars, craggy clifftop views and the endless expanse of the scorching desert.
But in real life Black Tomato Style, Esher was not informed until after she left.
“I didn’t know where I was going,” she smiles.
“I really hate the cold so I thought this would be my chance for them to pick the polar region, you know?” “
Ultimately, his destination was a secluded spot high in the Anti-Atlas Mountains – beautifully treacherous terrain filled with sheep, macaques, and the occasional vipers.
She spent three days in this environment, circling sand dunes and walking through shrub-lined mountains.
“The fact that I was in Morocco really didn’t strike me until I was there in the desert. I was sitting on top of a sand dune watching the sunset and it was exactly what I imagined.
As night fell, Esther unpacked her tent and built her camping stove, surviving freeze-dried provisions under the moonlit sky.
“On the third day, I went down to a river bed and there were date palms and other villages. I hated this third day, because I could start to see telephone poles and villages and I’m like, can I sneak into the mountains and stay here forever? “
Fight for my life
For Esther, her Get Lost experience was more than a vacation. It was an act of hope.
“I was in a deep depression and just the fact that I felt alive again was a self-prescribed attempt to try to come to life.”
Since returning home, she has enlisted in the military – an attempt to pursue her passion for map reading, circumnavigation, and adventure.
“My clock is ticking and I’m going to start doing the things that keep me alive. I came back with a new vision of my life, ”she smiles.
“Why would I want to go back on regular vacation?” “
