Cape Fear residents experience long Uber and Lyft wait times
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – You may want to have a back-up plan if you rely on ridesharing services.
The Starnews reported that locals are experiencing long wait times and higher prices for Uber and Lyft.
Two weekends ago, Valérie Lazaridis said she and her friends found longer wait times in the area. When she finally flagged down a ride, it didn’t last long.
“My friends and I went to a wedding and we tried to get an Uber,” recalls Lazaridis. “It was 11:30 am, and Uber said it was 30 minutes away. And then he canceled two minutes around the block. And no Uber was around the corner for another 45 minutes so we had to walk back.
Uber spokesman Javi Correoso said the company has seen more drivers enter the fold in recent weeks, with the week of May 17 setting a record for drivers returning to the platform.
With new incentives, Uber says the average Raleigh market driver earns around $ 27 an hour.
“We have seen improvement in the past few weeks across the country, including North Carolina,” Correoso said. “We are really focused on getting more drivers back, and as more people get vaccinated and more people start to come back, I think the driver experience is going to continue to grow. improve during the summer months. “
When asked to comment, a Lyft spokesperson responded, “We have added thousands of drivers over the past few weeks and this is already leading to a better driving experience with wait times dropping by. more than 15% nationally and 35% in certain major markets. . This continues to be a good time to drive with drivers in major markets earning a lot more than they were before the pandemic. “
