Brooklyn man charged in high-speed Christmas Eve crash that killed Uber passenger – NBC New York
A grand jury indictment has fallen almost exactly nine months to the day, according to Queens officials, a reckless driver crashed into an Uber, killing a female passenger just blocks from her home.
Jason Liriano, 23, allegedly drove a luxury vehicle through Ozone Park on Christmas Eve last year when he crashed into the Uber, causing his own car to overturn and the death of a woman and injuring him several others.
The Brooklyn man was arraigned Thursday in the Queens Supreme Court for criminal negligence homicide, leaving the scene without reporting, aggravating unlicensed driving of the vehicle and driving over the speed limit. A request for comment from his lawyer was not immediately returned.
“Behind the wheel of an expensive sports car, the accused allegedly drove
at high speed and collide with the other car on the rear passenger side. As claimed, his reckless conduct unfortunately resulted in the tragic death of an innocent woman, ”District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement.
Ritawantee Persaud, 54, was in the back of the Uber, just four blocks from her home in Ozone Park when the Lamborghini crashed into the vehicle.
The Uber driver was turning left on 103rd Avenue when the Lamborghini collided with what investigators say was high speed. Police at the time said the previously unidentified driver fled the scene on foot.
The Lamborghini overturned in the crash, crashed alongside the Uber pilot’s Toyota Camry. Police found a 26-year-old female passenger inside the luxury vehicle with head and spine injuries. The Uber driver sustained head and leg injuries, police said.
