Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, The Countess of Wessex, shared their thoughts on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.
In the couple’s first big interview, they spoke to The Telegraph’s Camilla Tominey about everything from Prince Philip’s death in April to their public service. The royal couple also acknowledged the explosive interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
When asked if they had watched the CBS TV special, Edward acted shyly. “Oprah who?” Edward, the son of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth, said.
Sophie added, laughing: “Yes, what interview?”
Tominey of the Telegraph then shared an “anecdote about the Archbishop of Canterbury apparently having a long conversation with Winfrey at Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018 without having a clue who she was”.
Sophie has come to the Archbishop of Canterbury’s defense by suggesting that people probably don’t know who Winfrey is.
“You know, if you don’t like cats, there’s no reason you should know who she is,” she said. “Certainly not in this country, anyway.” Representatives for the Earl and Countess of Wessex did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
In March, Winfrey sat down with Harry and Markle for an interview that sent shockwaves through the Royal Family. The couple made several frowning statements, including that Markle was having suicidal thoughts after joining the royal family and Kate Middleton made him cry on her wedding week.
Harry and Markle officially stepped down from their royal duties in January 2020 and then left the UK. They briefly settled in Canada before settling in California.
The Telegraph reported that Edward and Sophie were forced to step up their royal duties in the absence of Harry and Markle.
“Well we’re flattered is probably the best way to put it,” Edward said.
“Inevitably the spotlight and attention will shift to the younger members over time,” Sophie said. “We just kept doing what we’re doing, hopefully. And then all of a sudden there’s a little hiatus and things have changed a bit.”
Sophie said the media are “looking for people to fill the so-called void, but you know we’ve been doing this for what seems like quite a long time!”
